June Winterland!

Although we may be moving into mid-June, and despite many parts of the country experiencing summer-like conditions, here at Mount Rainier mother nature has once again thrown us a curve-ball, dumping more than 3 feet of snow on The Mountain in the last 7 days. Last night winds were high enough to carry snow into drifts with depths of 3, 4 and even 5 feet in spots. Visibility on the Muir snowfield has been poor, although breaks in the weather have been found and parties are continuing to travel up to Camp Muir, albeit with CAUTION. Experience in route finding is necessary as whiteout conditions have also been reported.

REMINDER: Keep up to date on changing weather forecasts. Although the forecast may improve through the week, AS ALWAYS, be prepared for winter-like conditions on the upper mountain, variable weather enroute, and have alternative plans in the case your party gets turned around due to inclement conditions.

Almost Summer...

The mountain was busy this last week with climbers. The guided groups are in their summer routine on the Muir Corridor, the trip from Muir back to Paradise can still be made on skis, and most of the routes haven't even started melting out. If only the weather this early-season would cooperate. Check out new route condition reports on the Emmons, DC, and Liberty Ridge. Enjoy yourselves and climb safely!

Into the weekend

Memorial Day weekend is here and so far, there hasn't been any chaos on the mountain. Surprisingly, the weather was quite pleasant today (Saturday) so getting to a high camp was actually reasonable. There is an update on the Muir Snowfield conditions, a new post on the Emmons Route, as well as a few recent aerial images that have been added to the Kautz, Mowich and Success routes.
